Keep The Muscle/ Lose the Fat

Is the shape of your body defined by lean muscle or fat? Age 40 officially marks the time that we begin to lose about one-half pound of muscle per year and replace it with an equivalent amount of fat... unless we do something to ward off this unhealthy muscle-to-fat ration. That "something" is an exercise program that uses resistance, such as drumbbells. Your muscles will always respond to this exercise challenge by becoming stronger, whether you are 40 or 80. And, resistance-type exercises cause a pull of your muscles on your bones which increases bone density.

Since muscle is your body's most metabolic tissue, it stands to reason that the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn, even while at rest. If you diet to reduce body fat without exercising your muscles, you will lose fat and muscle... not a good look!

Correct form is the guiding principal during every workout. You may increase the resistance (heavier weights) only when you can do so with meticulous form. At the point that you form is compromised, you can go to lighter weights, or no weights at all.

My suggestion: find an exercise program, such as Body Electric (http://www.bodyelectric.com/) that offers a full-body muscle-toning workout. Once you are familiar with the movements, you can continue to perform each exercise for 3-1/2 minutes (using a kitchen timer).

You may work a particulat muscle on successive days, provided that there is no soreness. However, keep in mind that mild soreness is proof prositive that you have challenged your muscles by going beyond what is usual and comfortable. In any case, work all muscles a minimim of every three days so you don't lose the precious strength and muscle tone you have gained.

The winning combination for ultimate health and vitality at every age:
  • Proper nutrition
  • Aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, to strengthen your heart (a muscle) and lungs, and also burn calories
  • Muscle toning exercises to strengthen your muscles and bones
  • Stretching exercisesto maintain your range-of-motion
  • Rest and relaxation... lots!!!
Best of Health,

Yoga is not only good for the mind and a source of exercise, but it can also help the body get rid of toxins that we acquire during the day. These toxins can make us feel bloated and sluggish and in the long run can affect our immune system.
The body is cleansed through pumping of lymph fluids through channels in the body. These fluids are not pumped by the heart like our blood, but are moved primarily through contractions in the skeletal muscles. In yoga, there are two types of exercises that are particularly effective in aiding the transport of lymph fluid, detoxing the body and calming the mind:
  • Inverted poses stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the natural movement of lymph fluids. With the legs overhead, fluid drains from the feet and legs, stimulating the passive flow of lymph fluid and increasing the rate of drainage, cleaning out your immune system. The most effect inversion for detoxing is Salamba Sarvangasana. If students cannot comfortably hold shoulder stand for long then try Viparita Karani. If this pose is still too demanding, then Viparita Karani using the wall (legs up the wall) is a great pose. In this variation it is important to use a bolster or blankets under the shoulders to elevate the hips and put pressure on the shoulders.
  • Poses that involve muscular contraction of the legs and arms also act as a detox. The most effect pose would be Garudasana. If this is not possible then try Baddha Ardha Matsyendrasana.

So, not only is yoga good for the mind, body, and spirit it can also help us detox and maintain a strong immune system.

If you have any questions or comments regarding yoga and its benefits, please contact us!

We were fit, athletic and wanted to be taken seriously.

Monday August 10, 2009

Several years ago…
while visiting South Florida, I happened upon the Body Up store on Lincoln Road: I walked out with a fabulous pair of black “everything” pants that I’m still in love with.

If you’re a fitness enthusiast, like me, you wore Flashdance-style sweatshirts and legwarmers in the ‘80’s and coveted dancewear brands such as Flexitard and Dance France. You loved aerobic dance, and it showed.

By the early 1990’s we had moved our memberships from dance-exercise studios to one-stop-shop gyms and traded our lycra for comfort and practicality. We were younger and older, rural and city, large and small. More importantly, we were fit, athletic and wanted to be taken seriously.

If you are a Body Electric “friend,” and have followed my lead on any number of PBS stations across the U.S (since 1984), you know that I’m a fanatic about correct form. My attention to detail also carries over to music, set and dancewear. I have produced 20 series of 26 shows…more than 520 shows in all…so, you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover Body Up with exercise-wear that merged high performance with high style. (The current “1900” series of Body Electric programs features clothing by Body Up.)
Fast forward to August, 2009…

I recently met with the Body Up crew at the Lincoln Road store to explore ways to cross-promote our shared goals” to motivate and empower our customers. (See the picture of my recent meeting with the ladies of Body Up.) Personally, I am continually striving to redefine my Body Electric brand so that it remains effective, authentic and relevant. It’s based not on one’s age, amount of body fat or fitness level. Rather, it speaks of grace, strength and vitality. My relationship with Body Up continues to be a perfect fit.

Best of health,

Get Psyched - Mark it On Your Calendar!!

For me, just wanting to lose weight is never enough of a reason to stick to a fitness plan. I can't tell you how many times in my life I have felt the disappointment of failure due to loss of motivation. Sure I always start a healthy eating plan or fitness schedule with determination and high hopes. But after about a week of hard work and deprivation the whole idea seems to lose it's luster. I start to ask myself, "Do I really want to lose weight this badly? It doesn't seem worth it". I can talk myself out of hard work quite easily. This is why I need a good, solid reason to stick to a health and fitness plan. A reason other than simply wanting to lose weight. I am a professional physique competitor and a fitness model. I have turned my fitness goals into a career and I love what I do, but I am still human and I fall off course several times throughout the year. I know all too well what it feels like to have a great desire to look and feel great, yet fall into temptation when dessert is being passed around the table. And I know how it feels to give into temptation all weekend with friends and it's that much harder to regain self control come Monday. I've been there, and that is why I give myself a goal that is important enough for me to want to stick to a plan. I will chose a fitness competition and mark the date on my calendar. I will send in my contract so it is official - I MUST show up and I must be in shape! For what it's worth, I am the only person who cares whether I have done my best to prepare for my show. If I am not at my best for competition the judges will give me a poor score and get on with the show. I will not be scolded or mistreated. Luckily I have a great determination when I am preparing for competition and after all is said and done I walk out onto the stage with confidence, knowing I have given it my all. Nothing feels as good as knowing I've reached my goals, it's wonderful! I remind myself that whatever my placing is, I've done my best and that is what matters.I am well aware of the fact that i will not be competing for the rest of my life. What I do want to take with me is the self motivational skills I've learned. While the true goal will always be health and longevity, motivation can be kicked into high gear with realistic small goals. When there is a date checked on the calendar I will know to look forward the pride I will feel on that day. Whether it is a special event or a fun day of shopping for new jeans, the journey leading up to this day will be fun and exciting. And afterwords, the satisfaction of a goal attained is usually reason enough to stick with it!Other ways to find motivation are small but powerful. Buy yourself a cute new fitness outfit that you can't wait to wear! I love Body Up fitness wear - www.bodyup.com. Get a workout partner who has similar goals. Cook and eat healthy meals with your family! Make fitness a part of your life and get excited!

SkinCare Advice by Leyda Elizabeth Bowes

Outdoor activities and exercise are very important components of a healthy lifestyle. But with cumulative exposure to the sun, especially over the years, our skin begins to show signs of damage and aging, called dermatoheliosis. A 3-part basic skin care regimen can help prevent and fight such damaging skin changes. This includes:

A repair cream that is best applied at bedtime. Retinoid creams are used for this purpose (tretinoin, tazarotene, adapalene). They fight signs of previous sun damage, stimulate new collagen, correct fine lines and wrinkles, and can have a preventive effect on the development of precancer lesions known as actinic keratoses.

A preventive cream to be applied in the morning. These creams are typically antioxidant molecules (especially vitamins C and E) that are able to fight free radical damage in the environment, and thus prevent future or ongoing sun-induced skin damage and aging. Antioxidant creams, most notably those with vitamin C, should be dispensed in a specially sealed tube, as opposed to jars, to avoid oxidation of the active molecules and therefore loss of its beneficial effects.

Sunscreen! It should be applied every morning, just before the make-up, if the latter is being used. An SPF of 30 offers excellent protection, blocking more than 97.5% of harmful sun rays. Use a light powder or paste-type sunscreen that reads noncomedogenic, to prevent acne flares.
